The Willamette National Forest needed a sturdy shelter in one of its day-use areas along Breitenbush River, several miles north of Detroit, Ore. Located in the heavily forested western slope of the Cascade Range, the area is popular in the summer among locals and visitors alike. The Santiam River Canyon, Detroit Reservoir and plentiful campgrounds and day-use areas attract people escaping the Willamette Valley’s summer heat. Only about 50 miles southeast of Salem, Ore., the day-use area and adjacent campground are ideally situated for large groups needing camping and gathering space.Besides the busy schedule of summer uses, the Forest Service’s new log structure had to be designed to withstand heavy winter snow. It’s not uncommon for the area to have a five-foot-deep snow pack that lasts for months.
In addition to the log shelter, other improvements to the day-use area and campground were undertaken at the same time. Romtec supplied new SST® Aspen waterless restrooms with rustic wood siding and log accents. New paving, parking and trail improvements were also completed.
The log shelter chosen for this site maintains the rustic look preferred by many forests in western states. In fact, the Forest Service left the logs unsealed, so they will turn a natural silver-gray shade. The structure’s massive log posts are anchored in deep concrete footings, and split log benches are built into the rail around the perimeter of the shelter. The metal roof does a good job of shedding winter snow and the rain that western Oregon is famous for.
Under the shelter is a warm, inviting 24’ x 36’ space with a high, vaulted ceiling and plenty of natural light. The log trusses and wood ceiling give pleasant warmth to the space below. There is plenty of seating inside; the Forest Service’s own cast concrete tables with benches were chosen for use in the shelter.
