When the Elementary School in Gates, Ore. wanted an outdoor classroom for its forest ecology classes, the idea of a log pavilion was appealing. Located along State Route 22, about 35 miles southeast of Salem, Ore., the town of Gates is a community with deep roots in Oregon’s timber harvesting history. A log structure would provide excellent shelter for the school’s outdoor classes, and it could also be used by the community for various gatherings and events.Located on school property, the new outdoor classroom is along a network of walking trails used by students and teachers as part of the environmental curriculum. The pavilion itself offers plenty of space for classroom activities. The high vaulted ceiling and open air design work very well in the area’s mild fall and spring weather. The school’s own tables, chairs and other equipment and supplies are brought into the pavilion during the school year. The pavilion’s built-in split log benches provide additional seating around the perimeter of the covered space. Instead of a poured concrete slab, the school opted for using compacted gravel as the pavilion’s floor.
The pavilion’s Douglas fir logs are harvested from nearby forest land and transported to the storage yard where they are air dried being selected for use. The process of peeling the logs, cutting them to length and trimming and joining them requires woodworking skills with a long history in western Oregon. Each log structure is completely preassembled to ensure accurate fit and efficient final assembly.
After the Gates Elementary School pavilion was assembled, several coats of penetrating wood sealer were applied to all surfaces, giving the wood a warm honey color. With minimal maintenance, just reapplying sealer every few years, the pavilion will serve the school and community for many years.
