style="font-size: 15px; line-height: 1.2em; font-family: helvetica;">The Willamette National Forest needed a sturdy shelter in one of its day-use areas along Breitenbush River, several miles north of Detroit, Ore. Located in the heavily forested western slope of the Cascade Range, the area is popular in the summer among locals and visitors alike. The Santiam River Canyon, Detroit Reservoir and plentiful campgrounds and day-use areas attract people escaping the Willamette Valley’s summer heat. Only about 50 miles southeast of Salem, Ore., the day-use area and adjacent campground are ideally situated for large groups needing camping and gathering space.

Besides the busy schedule of summer uses, the Forest Service’s new log structure had to be designed to withstand heavy winter snow. It’s not uncommon for the area to have a five-foot-deep snow pack that lasts for months.

In addition to the log shelter, other improvements to the day-use area and campground were undertaken at the same time. Romtec supplied new SST® Aspen waterless restrooms with rustic wood siding and log accents. New paving, parking and trail improvements were also completed.

The log shelter chosen for this site maintains the rustic look preferred by many forests in western states. In fact, the Forest Service left the logs unsealed, so they will turn a natural silver-gray shade. The structure’s massive log posts are anchored in deep concrete footings, and split log benches are built into the rail around the perimeter of the shelter. The metal roof does a good job of shedding winter snow and the rain that western Oregon is famous for.

Under the shelter is a warm, inviting 24’ x 36’ space with a high, vaulted ceiling and plenty of natural light. The log trusses and wood ceiling give pleasant warmth to the space below. There is plenty of seating inside; the Forest Service’s own cast concrete tables with benches were chosen for use in the shelter.

Romtec can help you get the log pavilion you need for your project. Our free designs and preassembly save you time and money. The complete structure can be assembled at your site in as little as four days.

Romtec Log Pavilions are available in many sizes up to 35′ wide by 45′ long. Choose a concrete slab or wood deck floor, or go with the same compacted gravel surface chosen by Willamette National Forest. You can add masonry details of natural or cultured stone and choose roofing of cedar shakes, composition shingles or metal.

Gates Elementary – Custom Log Pavilion

Custom Shelters and Pavilions

test category

When the Elementary School in Gates, Ore. wanted an outdoor classroom for its forest ecology classes, the idea of a log pavilion was appealing. Located along State Route 22, about 35 miles southeast of Salem, Ore., the town of Gates is a community with deep roots in Oregon’s timber harvesting history. A log structure would provide excellent shelter for the school’s outdoor classes, and it could also be used by the community for various gatherings and events.

Located on school property, the new outdoor classroom is along a network of walking trails used by students and teachers as part of the environmental curriculum. The pavilion itself offers plenty of space for classroom activities. The high vaulted ceiling and open air design work very well in the area’s mild fall and spring weather. The school’s own tables, chairs and other equipment and supplies are brought into the pavilion during the school year. The pavilion’s built-in split log benches provide additional seating around the perimeter of the covered space. Instead of a poured concrete slab, the school opted for using compacted gravel as the pavilion’s floor.

The pavilion’s Douglas fir logs are harvested from nearby forest land and transported to the storage yard where they are air dried being selected for use. The process of peeling the logs, cutting them to length and trimming and joining them requires woodworking skills with a long history in western Oregon. Each log structure is completely preassembled to ensure accurate fit and efficient final assembly.

After the Gates Elementary School pavilion was assembled, several coats of penetrating wood sealer were applied to all surfaces, giving the wood a warm honey color. With minimal maintenance, just reapplying sealer every few years, the pavilion will serve the school and community for many years.

Romtec designs, supplies and installs Log Pavilions for a wide variety of uses by public agencies and private organizations. These handcrafted structures reflect America’s pioneering spirit. They are perfect for parks, playgrounds, campgrounds – anywhere you need a unique and attractive shelter and gathering place.

Romtec Log Pavilions are available in many sizes up to 35′ wide by 45′ long. These beautifully crafted open air structures offer the most pleasant shelter imaginable. The hand peeled and sealed Douglas Fir logs create a naturally warm and inviting space. You are literally surrounded by sustainably harvested timber.

Custom Shelter & Pavilion

Custom Shelters and Pavilions
<guid
