Why Solar?

Solar panel energySince the public has become more and more aware of solar and the government (both state and local) has offered incentives to become “green”, Solar has become a very viable and more cost effective solution to reduce ones electric bill.
Here is an example of a solar system a homeowner i know has installed.  A few years ago while being involved in the building industry, a contractor friend was asked to build a summer home here in Oregon for an individual.  The home was to be built on a mountain top about one mile from the power grid tie in. The initial estimate from the local power company to tie into the grid was around $100,000.  Needless to say the home owner wanted to spend much less money for power in a vacation home, so they decided to go off grid. They added solar into the plans, with a battery and generator back up. Realizing that they had a spring fed pond that overflowed into a small natural creek, they took the over flow of water from the pond, and funneled it down a pipe that went to a small but highly effective hydro electric generator. Now, the home owner was producing all of their own electrical needs, and as it turned out they started producing more than they could use.

In the state of Oregon, a power company is required by law to buy any excess power that a homeowner may produce. This required the power company to run a power line to the customer’s home at the power company’s expense and purchase the homeowners excess electricity. This is an extreme case, but it shows that you can make solar power a very viable option.
Romtec offers the option of either a grid tie in system, or an off grid system. This is a relatively a small investment in comparison to the overall cost of a project. It is one of the few items in a building project that truly pays you. Between incentives from the federal, state, local governments and power companies, and what you save in your electric bill every month, solar is definitely worth looking at. If you’re lucky you may even produce enough power to sell it back to your local utility company and make some bonus cash. So now the question isn’t, “why would you look into solar?” The question is, “why wouldn’t you look into solar?”
