Building design has come a long way from the old days of hand drafting. A large improvement to time (and number of erasers) came with the introduction of computers, but they were only capable of duplicating the hand drafting process. Modern computers allow for more sophisticated drawings and easier functions for the drafter including the use of three dimensional designs and building information modeling. One such program, called Revit Architecture, has allowed Romtec to be on the cutting edge of public restroom and custom building design.

Revit Architecture has one feature (among many) that allow Romtec, to design custom buildings better than they have in the past using traditional unintelligent AutoCAD software. In the past, the drafter had to create a floor plan and elevations of the building all as separate views with nothing linked together. If the building needed to be revised, the drafter had to go to each individual view and make the change, which was a very time consuming endeavor. Now, with Revit, the drafter can create one model of the building and all the views are linked to that model. If one aspect of the building changes, the drafter only needs to update the model and all views get updated automatically. This feature also carries over to schedules. Construction drawings of the building need to include schedules of the various components in order to paint the picture of what is included in the building. In Revit these schedules get linked directly to the model, so, if the drafter needs to switch the restroom lavatories from porcelain to stainless steel, they can modify the schedule and the model changes automatically as well as all corresponding views.
Linking of views, details, and schedules is only one aspect of Revit that improves the design process for drafters of today compared to the old days of unintelligent software and hand drafting. Romtec managed to stay in the game using some of those older techniques, but now thanks to Revit Architecture, Romtec will be a force within the realm of restroom and custom building design.
